What Are Birth Announcements Anyway?

You've had your new baby boy or girl, and it's time to tell the world! The perfect way to send this message to all of your family and friends is with a Baby Announcement. A birth announcement is a printed card sent to friends and family to inform them of the birth of a child. Usually these cards are heavy paper, but they can also be comprised of vellum, ribbons, buttons and more.

Because your birth announcements are your child’s first introduction, it should be tasteful but also fun and attractive. Text usually includes some or all of the following information: gender, baby’s name, date of arrival, time of birth, weight, length, and parents’ names.

Often times, pictures are not included with most traditional birth announcements.

The rule of thumb for birth announcements is to send them to everyone you think might want to know. While they should be sent out as quickly as possible after your newborn arrives, friends understand that parents of newborns have their hands full and it is not unusual for months to pass before announcements are sent.

The most important rule is to have fun with your Birth Announcements and your new baby!

Etiquette for Birth Announcements:
Are Photographs Required with a Birth Announcement

Some new parents may feel that it is a requirement to include a photograph of your newborn with the birth announcement. This is not always necessary.

Some announcements are specifically designed to include a photograph. If this is the case, it is suggested that you want until your baby is close to a month old to take a photo for the announcement, this will ensure that the photo is a more accurate reflection of what your baby looks like. Many times a newborn hasn't completely filled out into cute little baby he or she will become.

If you send your birth announcements out shortly after your baby is born a good idea is to induce a picture in the thank you notes you will surely be sending out. This way, those family members and friends that have expressed a specific interest in your baby will benefit from getting a keepsake.

As with most birth announcement decisions, this is (and always will) remain a personal preference of the parents. Whatever you decide will ultimately be the best choice for you and your baby as lon as you are comfortable it
